He was initially assigned to the 77th Battalion. In April 1916 he was transferred to the 224th Battalion and embarked the SS Missanabie on 18 April 1916 and landed in England on the 28th. He was promoted to acting Lance Corporal upon arrival in England. On 22 November 1916 he was transferred to the 29th Company Canadian Forestry Corps (CFC) and that unit was deployed to France on 24 April 1917, landing at Havre. He was appoint Lance Corporal when he arrived in France. On 5 August 1918 he was classified medically unfit for service with general debility, likely due to his age. He was tranferred to England on 12 August 1918. He left Liverpool, England on 23 September 1918 and landing in Halifax on 11 October 1918 aboard the ship Cardiganshire along with other medically unfit soldiers returning from the war in Europe. He was medical discharge on 7 November 1918.

On Wednesday, May 16, 1951, at his home, 218 Marier Rd., Eastview, Gilbert Charbonneau, husband of the late Emilie Rochon, aged 89 years. Resting at Horace Racine and Robert Ltd., 260 Besserer St. Funeral Saturday to Notre Dame de Lourdes Church, Eastview, for requiem mass at 8 o'clock. Interment Notre Dame. 6
